About Us

Project GO is ...
a joint project of HHCKLA Buddhist Po Kwong School and the Centre for Advancement in Inclusive and Special Education (CAISE), Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong.
We aimed at providing a new and creative view of social skill learning for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) students. According to different literature studies and international practices, many of the ASD students have a special interest towards transport (the system, vehicles, timetables, etc.). We observed some children could memorize the very detailed information of transport precisely. Although there is no absolute answer to this phenomenon, it has been used as a tool in some education programmes (example in United Kingdom and United States ).
Learnt from international practices, we designed the first phase of Project GO which is tailored made for Hong Kong students. The programme started running since 2015/16. During the first two years we invited HKU students as volunteers, and last year we started to bring the programme to the sight of the general public and invited corporate voluntary teams to visit our school and participate in outing activities.
According to the evaluation survey, teachers and parents noted an improvement of communication skills among students. Particularly, after interest-based learning, we saw students developed interests, care, and empathy towards others' feelings. We were excited to see the change. The next step we planned is to further investigate different aspects of potential advantage that the programme provided to students. We welcome academia collaboration.
In May 2018, Project GO was one of the Hong Kong speaker group in The 9th Cross-Strait Four Regions SEN Services Symposium (2018第九屆兩岸四地啓智服務研討會) organized by Taiwan Parents' Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability. We appreciate the opportunity to share Project GO experience with different service provider, schools, parents and children, and NGOs. We also learnt from other presentations. See More.

Project GO believes ASD students learn much better with strength based and interest based approach.
We do not aim at converting them into "normal", but we try to understand them and their "culture". We pay attention to what interests ASD student and start conversation accordingly. Although it is highly challenging, Project GO has contemplated to explore.
